Imagine this. Someone else writes the perfect e-book on your topic. It is exactly what you would have written - actually it is even better than what you had planned. Better still, the author is selling publishing rights to this book (commonly known as resale rights). You can purchase rights to the book, publish it yourself, and keep all the profits.

Sounds great, right!

Before you get too excited about following the resale rights pathway to riches, let me point out some of the shortcomings of this approach. With few exceptions, I don't recommend resale rights e-books.

Why You Should Avoid Resale Rights e-Books

First, you should avoid selling resale rights e-books because you don't get to create your own personal and unique e-book. Others will also have resale rights and you will be competing directly with them for customers. The people you are trying to sell to may be also receiving marketing materials from someone else for the exact same book! You will either have to package the e-book with other material to make it different or engage in a discounting battle that eats away at your profits. Few resale rights sellers restrict the number of licenses they sell to each book, so the number of competitors is continually growing.

Second, many of these resale e-books contain marketing information or links to other services which serve the purposes of the original writer and not you or your targeted readership. This is one of the ways that a resale rights e-book creator gets by with selling the e-books so cheaply for resale. You work to find customers and sell copies of the book. Then, the people that you sold the book to follow links inside to purchase products and services that benefit the author. You have no control over the links inside and the sites they direct readers to visit.

Third, e-book resale rights sellers are often aggressive in advertising their services inside their e-books. Your readers will find links to purchase resale rights for themselves and become your competitors.

Fourth, you are limited to how you can exploit the content. Many online marketplaces prohibit selling resale rights products or limit sales to one vendor per product. You will also be limited to selling the e-book in the format provided (generally a PDF file.) Selling print editions or converting to e-reader formats are usually prohibited. Even if you were able to make the conversions, marketplaces like will not allow you to sell resale rights products through their websites.

A Better Solution

Write your e-book yourself or have it ghostwritten for you and own a one-of-a-kind product. In the end, even if someone else wrote it for you, you dreamed it up, and (if you use a work-for-hire agreement with your ghostwriter) you own it outright. Ghostwritten and original e-books, compared to resales, offer maximum flexibility for you to market, revise, advertise, and exploit your content.

There are many ways to efficiently write an e-book, even if you are not a good writer. The key is to spend your time and energy developing the idea into a solid outline. Then, you can use dictation to talk about each item on your outline, sit down at the keyboard and write, or hand the outline over to a ghostwriter.

Once you have the core writing and editing done, you can publish the e-book in any way that fits your business model. You can create a print edition, publish on Kindle, sell PDF e-books on your own website, or create audio versions, videos, or any other related product that makes sense.

The Exception To The 'No Resale Rights' Rule

There are times when buying the resale rights to an existing product makes sense. The main reason is if you find a high quality e-book that would make a good bonus for an e-book you have written. If you sell teaching oriented products, there are often excellent resale rights products available that cover the basics. You might have an e-book that covers how to create videos using their smart phones. Instead of writing a chapter showing people how to upload their finished videos to YouTube, you could purchase the rights to an existing e-book and include it as a bonus.

Bonuses can be bundled with your main product, or offered as an incentive to get readers to join a mailing list. Amazon does not share customer data for purchasers of print books or Kindle books with the publisher. But, you can embed a great offer of bonus materials inside your book and entice readers to join your customer list.

Resale rights e-books are not a magical road to easy wealth. They can be helpful additions to your e-book business, but original content is still king.
